To make a memorable first impression for travelers arriving in Los Angeles, architectural firm PGAL partnered with M|R Walls to create an installation that spans five key locations throughout a terminal in a popular international airport.
Drawing inspiration from California’s iconic beaches and natural sand dunes, M|R Walls created a series of non-repetitive 3D textures that were seamlessly integrated through their patented technology.
When it came to selecting the right material to bring this impressive design to life, M|R Walls chose Corian® Solid Surface because it’s incredibly durable, hygienic, easy to clean, and can be molded and thermoformed into custom 3D shapes.
In addition to its functional benefit as a protective wall covering, the M|R Walls design provided an artful narrative to welcome travelers to California—perfectly suited for the interior of a busy international airport.
Using pieces carved from Corian® Solid Surface and a proprietary process, every element of the M|R Walls sand dune motif was pieced together like a puzzle leaving no visible seams. M|R Walls developed a custom attachment method for this project that required no sanding during the installation process. This enabled the feature wall to be installed in just under two weeks. At roughly 40 ft tall and 80 ft wide, the installation quickly became a prominent feature throughout the terminal.
With the ability to be easily cut, shaped, and seamlessly thermoformed, Corian® Solid Surface played a vital role in realizing this visionary design. The elegant finish of Corian® Solid Surface Bleached Nuwood also provided M|R Walls with the warm and comforting aesthetic needed to welcome every visitor in style.
