Recently opened, the public Vital Álvarez-Buylla Hospital in Mieres (Asturias) features an innovative, functional design that offers significant technical and health benefits. The design includes over 500 items of furniture made from the techno-surface Corian, located in areas of the new hospital where they bring most benefit. The work has been carried out by GISPASA, a public company of the Principality of Asturias.
The Verónica Durán Sela Architecture Studio has designed a wide range of specialised furniture, made from Corian® which, in addition to meeting all the hospital’s specific functional needs, offers an innovative and unique design that makes this 28,000 m2 health facility (with 120 rooms and a capacity for 234 beds) a true benchmark within the sector in Spain.
Corian® has been used to make a wide variety of clinical, specialised, examination and reception furniture for Vital Álvarez-Buylla. The furniture ranges from hospital admissions counters and examination furniture to surgical scrub facilities, baby baths, worktops for blood collection rooms, cast rooms and paediatric wards. Corian® has also been used in birth preparation units, booths for care units and holders for liquid dispensers, among other items.
Architect Durán Sela explains that she chose Corian® as the reference material because of its proven technical characteristics and the fact that it is up-to-date and compliant with the specific regulations that apply to the healthcare environment.
"Being a solid material that has the same properties in the core as on the surface, it is guaranteed to be durable, chemically resistant and water repellent, which are fundamental qualities where hospital equipment is concerned." She adds that it provides the highest level of security in an environment such as this, because "it is a solid material, without pores or joints, easy to clean and disinfect, with proven experience of use in hospitals." These advantages make Corian® particularly suitable and efficient when it comes to the healthcare sector.
